Choosing art To influence mood in your interior design
Mon Sep 23 2024
Every color has its unique psychological effect on us. When choosing colors for our home, we tend to gravitate towards colors that we mentally decide, relax or soothe us. The art we choose for our space depends on the colors we perceive as calming or aesthetic. Psychology shows that certain colors are linked to moods. Colors play a significant role in influencing mood, and art is a powerful vehicle for color in interior design. Warm colors like reds, oranges, and yellows are associated with energy, passion, and warmth. These colors are great for spaces like living rooms or dining areas, where you want to encourage conversation and social interaction. Whereas cool colors like blues, greens, and purples tend to evoke feelings of calm, serenity, and relaxation, making them ideal for bedrooms or bathrooms.
According to a survey by Saatchi Art, 71% of interior designers believe that art gives a room its final touch, and 70% of clients consider art a key element when decorating their homes (Gammons). Art and interior design are interconnected, collaborating to define the character and ambience of a room. While interior design focuses on a room’s functional and aesthetic layout, art provides depth, emotion, and a unique touch. The selection of artwork, whether a strong abstract painting, a soothing landscape, or a thought-provoking sculpture, can completely transform the atmosphere of a room, impacting everything from the color palette to the mood it generates. Integrating art into interior design helps to create cohesive spaces in
which every piece, from furniture to artwork, compliments and enhances the space’s overall narrative. A World Health Organization (WHO) report highlights that art in living and working spaces can significantly enhance mental well-being, reduce stress, and increase productivity, aligning with the growing trend of wellness-focused interior design. Beyond color, the art style also plays a key role in defining the mood of a room. Abstract art, with its free-form shapes and unconventional color palettes, can add a sense of boldness and creativity to a space. This style is particularly effective in modern or eclectic interiors, whose goal is to inspire and provoke thought.
On the other hand, more traditional or classical art can bring a sense of elegance and formality. Portraits, still lifes, and landscapes in a realistic style can instil a feeling of comfort, warmth, and familiarity. These works often work well in traditional or transitional spaces, where balance and harmony are key. The size and placement of art can also impact mood. A large, bold piece can dominate a room and become a statement, setting a strong emotional tone. Smaller pieces, when grouped, can create a more layered and put-together emotional experience, allowing for a mix of moods within a single space. Choosing the proper colors requires considering the room’s function, lighting, and the vibe you want to create. We can establish harmony by using color schemes such as monochromatic or complimentary and considering the psychological effects of certain colors and how they relate to the space’s intended purpose. Also, consider how natural and artificial light will interact with your chosen colors
